NEW SKIN alternates between Christensen’s visual works and poetic texts in an area of tension between the deeply personal and her professional artistic work. Both text and image circle around difficult experiences of vulnerability - including violence and sexual abuse in her childhood home - and investigates how these experiences lodge themselves in the body, memory and identity.
Christensen’s visual works lead the reader chronologically through the atmosphere in her childhood home - with a father who was violent and sexually abusive - and on to an investigation of her reactions and the after-effects of the trauma, to snapshots from the family life she has been part of making, where alcohol and mental disorder have been a challenge to the ability to move on on life, but where openness about the traumas has changed the family’s conditions. The pictures range from emotionally saturated depictions of individuals to more abstract and symbolic representations of moods and states. They are accompanied by short, striking statements which are almost like concrete poetry.
The works are accompanied by three texts which shed light on the theme of the book from art critical, medical and social historical perspectives. Mai Misfeldt contributes a text that places the works in both a contemporary and art historical context. Signe Uldbjerg of the Gender Museum Denmark writes about victim roles in Denmark both historically and with a contemporary viewpoint. In addition, we have reprinted a Danish research article about post-traumatic stress by the psychologists Priscilla Oehlenschläger and Anja Ida Hansen, which in this book is also published in English translation for the first time. Via these three perspectives a space for reflection is created, where personal experience is connected with broader societal structures and understandings.
It is the hope of the artist and the publisher that NEW SKIN, as well as appealing to an art audience, can also contribute to the public debate about violence and abuse, post-traumatic stress and the understanding of the ‘victim’ and/or ‘survivor’ - seen from both personal and societal perspectives.

NY HUD veksler mellem Christensens visuelle værker og lyriske tekster i et spændingsfelt mellem det dybt personlige og det professionelle kunstneriske arbejde. Både tekst og billede kredser om svære og sårbare erfaringer - herunder vold og seksuelle overgreb i barndomshjemmet - og undersøger, hvordan disse erfaringer sætter sig i krop, erindring og identitet.
Christensens visuelle værker fører læseren kronologisk gennem atmosfæren i hendes barndomshjem - med en far, der udøvede vold og seksuelle overgreb - og videre til en undersøgelse af hendes reaktioner og eftervirkninger af traumet, over til øjebliksbilleder fra den familie hun selv er med til at skabe, hvor alkohol og psykisk lidelse har udfordret evnen til at komme videre i livet, men hvor åbenhed om traumerne har ændret familiens vilkår. Billederne spænder fra følelsesmættede personskildringer til mere abstrakte og symbolske repræsentationer af stemninger og tilstande. De ledsages af korte, rammende udsagn, der nærmer sig konkret poesi.
Værkerne akkompagneres af tre tekster, som belyser bogens tematik fra henholdsvis kunstfaglige, lægevidenskabelige og samfundsfaglige perspektiver. Mai Misfeldt bidrager med en tekst, der sætter værkerne i både en samtids- og kunsthistorisk kontekst. Signe Uldbjerg fra Museet KØN skriver om offerrollen i Danmark både historisk set og med et nutidigt blik. Derudover genoptrykkes en forskningsartikel om posttraumatisk stress af psykologerne Priscilla Oehlenschläger og Anja Ida Hansen, som i denne udgivelse for første gang publiceres i engelsk oversættelse. Gennem disse tre perspektiver skabes et reflektionsrum, hvor de personlige erfaringer forbindes med bredere samfundsmæssige strukturer og forståelser.
